Job Description Summary
The VMware Product Engineering team is a senior team of VMware experts responsible for designing and implementing new VMware products at Rackspace.
The team works closely with teams in Development, Product Management, and Product Operations to deliver upgrades to existing VMware products at Rackspace and manage the lifecycle of these products from a deeply technical perspective.
VMware Product Engineers are responsible for designing upgrades to the largest hosted VMware environment in the world, including touchpoints at every stage of business process from pre
– sales, through implementation, billing and support.
Deliver assigned tasks on projects.
Perform various lab tasks-executing tests, building systems, troubleshooting, etc.
Deliver assigned tasks on multiple concurrent projects.
Manage execution of testing, system builds, troubleshooting, etc.
Provide content for various project documentation (OSID, qualification plans, issue lists, etc.).
Supports extended teams in CORE, portal, Billing, SalesForce, Oracle, RSTops, and Support in delivering project items.
May participate in extended team activities.
Manage execution of tasks on multiple concurrent projects.
Responsible for creation of project documents (OSID, qualification plans, issue lists, etc.).
Lead and/or mentor other Product Engineers.
Works independently with extended teams in CORE, portal, Billing, SalesForce, Oracle, RSTops and Support to ensure all requirements for new products are documented and understood.
Provides input to PjM on resource negotiations, managing workload and setting schedules.
Active participant in extended teams.
Technical escalation point for other PEs.

Accountable to DM or technical lead for given tasks.
Very little supervision required.
Can assist/guide others with their activities.
Will provide supervision and development for assigned staff.
Reports to more senior DM or PD Management.

Create, update and improve documentation relating to the deployment, management and lifecycle of VMware products
Manage the handover process of new products into technical support and ensure official sign
– off
Analysis of customer feedback on VMware products,
ensuring such feedback is utilized in future product developments.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Requires advanced technical knowledge in multiple areas but primarily, expert
– level VMware knowledge, ideally gained over a career in VMware administration, VMware support or VMware infrastructure management.
Advanced knowledge of more general virtualization technologies and operating systems, product development processes, business operations and product line technologies.
Intermediate knowledge of the theory and application of technology principles in the design and implementation processes of the Cloud Computing industry, specific to VMware.
Strong technical knowledge of data centers and broad IT industry knowledge.
Solid understanding of product design, testing and business integration challenges.
Working knowledge of the product development life cycle and the creative ability to participate in related problem solving and troubleshooting activities.
Ability to communicate technical information and ideas to non-technical audiences and successfully collaborate across functions and teams.
Strong knowledge of Rackspace internal operations and systems and the ability to lead problem solving and troubleshooting activities, driving consensus within group meetings.
Key Accountabilities
Manages and performs technical aspects of a product line by writing test plans, executing tests, building systems, troubleshooting issues, and completing other technical tasks, primarily focused on VMware technologies
Assists the Architect and/ or Project Manager with the creation of project documentation including task creation, milestone identification, qualification plans, issue lists, etc.
Ensures technical readiness of VMware projects prior to product release
Engage in pre
– sales support activities to assist with the qualification of prospects and provide guidance on VMware solutions at Rackspace
Manages design and build activities of potential products, including evaluation testing, vendor recommendations and qualification planning
Complete all functional testing for VMware products, including proof of concept, prototype and pilot testing environments
Confirms product meets stated design requirements, in collaboration with the VMware Product Architect and Product Manager
Provides detailed and relevant technology inputs to product line strategy and road maps
Maintains expert
– level knowledge of virtualization and Cloud Computing technologies.
Evaluates and researches VMware technology developments to provide assistance with roadmap planning and solution identification
Provides technical inputs and evaluations to management on resource requirements, to facilitate workload management and scheduling
Evaluates Rackspace organizational processes and procedures.
Recommends improvements for efficiency and effectiveness across the VMware product portfolio
Provides detailed technical training to Sales, Support and Implementation teams
Mentors and coaches other team members on both technical and business processes relating to the VMware product lines.
Provide strategy and planning support to projects and product lines.
Able to evaluate technologies and determine where they fit inside Rackspace.
Senior experience of internal Rackspace Product Operation functions (CORE, Portal, Licensing, Support, Training, DWI, Oracle, etc).
Recommend new and alternate tests and methodologies.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Expert in VMware technologies, proven track record in a relevant technical field (ideally VMware) and certified to at least VCP standard
10+ years of VMware administration, troubleshooting and management experience in a large corporate or service provider environment
Advanced experience with VMware’s Software Defined Data Centre (SDDC) technologies is desirable, particularly NSX and vSAN
Functional knowledge of the vRealize suite of tools, experience of real world use cases and impact
Tenacious problem solver who will own issues, demonstrating grit and commitment until full resolution
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with exceptional attention to detail
Strong rapport and relationship building skills with internal departments and external customers and partners
Strong track record of demonstrating business awareness and commercial acumen to inform decision making
Broad understanding of IT industry working practices and methodologies
Strong understanding of Cloud Computing and Hosting trends and technologies
