Radiologic Technician

Responsible for rendering technical patient care and assistance to our patient population. Responsible for obtaining fluoroscopic images while maintaining radiation safety for patients as well as staff.

. Interacts with patients in an appropriate and professional manner.

a. Identification of patients is consistently completed according to institutional policy and procedure at all times.

b. Patients are transported safely with consideration to disease process.

c. Appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication techniques are used when interacting with patients and staff.

2. Adheres to basic radiation safety practices.

a. Minimizes patient/staff exposure to radiation utilizing coning and shielding when possible.

b. Verbally notifies physician after 5 minutes of fluoroscopy has elapsed.

c. Protective lead shielding is used during all fluoroscopic procedures, handled carefully, stored appropriately, and x-rayed at least annually to detect and prevent damage that could diminish their effectiveness.

d. Supervises use and monitors data collected from radiation dosimeters.

e. Informs Chief Operations Officer if a sentinel event dose occurs (1500rads)

3. Patient records are maintained in an accurate and secure manner.

a. Annotates and downloads all images to Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

b. Archives all images onto back-up external hard drive.

4. Assists in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, self and staff.

a. Patients are positioned under the direct supervision of the anesthesia care providers, circulating nurse and members of the surgical team with consideration given to physiologic principles, surgical site, patient modesty, joint hyperextension, peripheral nerve damage, compromised tissue and operating table type.

b. Electrosurgical dispersive electrode is placed with consideration of surgical site and underlying tissue under the direction of the circulating nurse.

c. Available to assist circulator in application of monitoring equipment when necessary.

d. A working knowledge of OR equipment is consistently demonstrated.

e. Malfunctioning equipment is removed from service and supervisor is notified.

f. Appropriate protocols are used when in OR where laser, x-ray and other specialized equipment is used.

5. Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues.

a. Response time to emergencies is as immediate as possible

b. Images are downloaded to EMR within one week of procedure.

c. Supplies are restocked in a timely and efficient manner.

6. Supports operating room procedures.

a. Timely attendance is demonstrated for all OR procedures performed.

b. Patient and personnel safety procedures are adhered to (infection control, fire safety, electric, chemical and radiation safety)

c. System issues are brought to the management’s attention in a timely manner.

d. Interdisciplinary team participation is evident in all areas of practice.

e. Emergency situations are immediately and competently responded to (cardiac arrest, difficult airway, etc.)

7. Maintains patient positioning devices.

a. Patient/procedure specific positioning devices are consistently examined for integrity and proper working order.

b. Devices are cleaned per protocol after each patient use.

c. Devices are stored correctly in their assigned places after use.

8. Demonstrates proper room cleaning and turnovers.

a. Employs appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when cleaning or disposing of waste that could result in exposure to blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious microorganisms, or hazardous materials.

b. Equipment used during the procedure is cleaned and returned to proper place or removed at the end of the procedure.

c. Gross spillage of blood and body fluids is cleaned using the appropriate cleaning solution as soon as possible.

d. Linen and trash bags are sealed, handled carefully, and taken to the appropriate disposal area with consideration for others who may come into contact with the contaminated waste.

e. All OR equipment, tables, kick buckets, c-arm, walls, floors, etc. are cleaned using appropriate cleaning solutions and policy protocols.

9. Assumes responsibility for professional development of self.

a. Strengths and opportunities for professional development are identified and goals for self-improvement are set and documented.

b. Annual mandatory training activities are completed within established timeframes.

c. Mandatory continuing education for RT licensure is completed in a timely manner to ensure a

current license.

10. Demonstrates leadership in the delivery of technical patientcare.

a. Active participant in accomplishing the goals of the surgery center.

b. Recognition and support of peers is provided on a routine basis.

c. Time management and organizational skills are demonstrated, and role modeled on a routine basis.

11. Responsible for management of radiographic medical records and maintenance of radiologic protocols.

a. Maintains Radiographic Procedure Log.

b. Compiles necessary information for the completion of target benchmark procedures to ensure average fluoroscopy times are held to standard.

c. Radiographs all protective devices annually and maintains Protective Devices Log to ensure integrity of lead aprons, thyroid shield and table drape.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to lift >20lbs. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting up to fifty (50) lbs.

2. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

3. Acute attention to detail and ability to write legibly.

4. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, cold, radiation, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
