Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.
Responsibilities for Speech Language Pathologist include, but are not limited to:Work with a diversity of patient populations including pediatrics, adults, and geriatricsCollaboration with a multidisciplinary team in an outpatient setting, with willingness to provide in-home or school based services on an as need basisPrepare engaging exercises and activities to use during speech sessions with patientsProvide counseling and consultations for new patientsCreate goals and objectives for patients to work toward and identify areas of progress and challengesAs appropriate, oversee speech-language pathologist assistants and support their full-scope understanding of how to manage a patientPrepare speech pathology equipment and exam room ensuring proper sterilization and safety procedures are followedReview the patient’s electronic file prior to their appointment and have a clear understanding of the challenge to be addressedAttend continuing education courses and work to advance personal knowledge and experience within the fieldRequest and organize written authorization from patients involving specific follow up instructions and goals for improvement
