Transportation
– Routing/Technology Lead
REPORTS TO: Transportation Administrator
WORK DAYS: 260
POSITION PURPOSE: To provide planning and oversight to the transportation routing operation assuring safe and efficient scheduling and routing for all students.
Research, recommend and implement all forms of technology required for safe operation of the transportation department.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Provide oversight and training, under general supervision for all transportation technical systems including the routing department.
Requires advanced knowledge of routing procedures, systems and transportation operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – May include, but are not limited to, the following:
Coordinate the work of other routing personnel by planning, prioritizing, and assigning tasks.
Respond to technical questions, ensure route efficiency, utilize routing software, identify training requirements, and provide technical training and development to the transportation staff.
Ensure efficient school bus routing for all regular and special needs students, including school days, non-school days, summer, and snow routes.
Evaluate and establish operations, activities, methods, schedules, processes, and assigned responsibilities while recommending improvements and modifications to maximize efficiency and cost containment.
Prepare various reports.
Serve as department routing liaison to the district and public.
Receive and follow up on complaints and issues while recommending corrective action to bring resolution.
Develop a working relationship with customers and coworkers to provide excellence in customer service by maintaining effective communication and coordination of multiple department and agency timelines and needs.
Coordinate with the district technology department in the maintenance and ongoing support of the transportation routing software and other systems and technologies used in daily operations.
Ensure systems are functioning, secure and backed-up.
Inspect routing staff methods and practices for quality control, efficiencies and optimization.
Utilize continuing education opportunities to keep current on changes and updates to existing software programs and new developments in software and hardware which could improve transportation services.
Develop training for staff on utilization of new or updated software and hardware to ensure smooth implementation.
Contribute to the budgeting process by participating in budget preparation, and cost estimates for requested services and hardware.
Evaluate new technology purchases for the transportation department.
Assist in developing and maintaining information for ODE supplemental plans, state reports, safe school bus stop locations, school boundaries, and bell schedules.
Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Perform related duties consistent with job description and assignment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Sound management methods and practices and office procedures.
Computer hardware and related peripheral equipment.
Software, applications related to student transportation, office business and data collection.
Financial principles, processes, and cost benefit analysis.
Best business practices and how they relate to student transportation.
Rules and regulations as they pertain to school bus drivers including but not limited to district policies and rules applicable to school bus operations, Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Driver License, Oregon Department of Education school bus certification, PL 94-142, FMVSS, IDEA, ADA, and McKinney-Vento Act.
ABILITY TO:
Analyze and interpret data and prepare written reports.
Apply relevant laws, regulations, rules, procedures and policies.
Maintain files, records and documentation.
Learn streets, roads and school locations within the district boundaries.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and training would be:
At least one year of transportation routing or dispatching experience.
Documented software manufacturer-sponsored training in a computerized routing system.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of or the ability to obtain within six months, a valid Class B Commercial Driver License and an Oregon School Bus Certificate.
Bilingual/Bicultural Preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Constant talking, hearing, and sitting for prolonged periods in a confined area.
Frequent reaching, handling and fingering.
Mobility to work in typical office setting and use standard office equipment.
Vision: Frequent near and far acuity.
Vision to read printed materials and computer screen or other monitoring devices.
Strength: Generally sedentary/light.
Exerting up to 15 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Schedule: Monday
– Friday (on school days)
