Job Summary/Position Objectives:
Performs required procedures to complete the collection, handling, transport and processing of blood, urine and other clinical samples to support diagnostic testing. Performs “waived testing” as regulated under CLIA guidelines. Performs ancillary testing to include EKG, pulmonary function, audiogram, placement of blood pressure monitors, holter and event monitors. Utilizes electronic computer systems; specifically Practice Management System, Electronic Health Record, Laboratory Information System and associated Referral Laboratory interface in support of routine laboratory processes and procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Independently researches sample collection and handling requirements.
- Performs sample collection via venipuncture and capillary punctures. Assure sample collection in a manner that complies with stated collection and handling criteria; specifically, accurately identify and label specimens, recognize and alert processing staff of special processing, temperature or handling requirements.
- Instruct patients in pre-analytical specimen collection requirements and procedures.
- Assists with sample processing and pre-analytical.
- Perform waived category testing.
- Perform all data entry functions necessary to order, result and bill patient tests.
- Performs procedures offered through ancillary Service area; EKG’s, Pulmonary Function Testing, application of Holter Monitor, Event Monitor and ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitors, audiograms, nerve conduction studies.
- Plans, prioritizes, and organizes workload; respond to increased patient volume to support minimal delays.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively; both verbally and in writing.
- Identifies problems and effectively problem solves with limited input requiring direct supervision.
- Utilizes computers and computer software; Laboratory Information System (LIS), Electronic Health Record (EHR), and Practice Management System.
Other Duties:
- Other duties as requested by Director, Ancillary Services Coordinator and/or Laboratory Assistant IIIs.
- Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
Job Requirements:
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- High School diploma.
- Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy school or equivalent experience.
- Phlebotomy certification by a national testing agency or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of Medical and Diagnostic Laboratory terminology.
- Current Certification in BLS/CPR.
- Basic knowledge of “waived testing” requirements and ability to perform testing in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines and Salem Clinic Laboratory procedures.
- Effective organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Specifically, ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals; patients, providers, lab staff etc.
- Ability to manage frequent interruptions while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. Must be detail oriented.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and staff.
- Ability to perform defined duties through the use of electronic system (PMS, EHR, LIS etc).
- Ability to work all shifts/sites, regardless of the day of week.
- Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making. Ability to work without direct supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working in a fast paced, clinic setting.
- Successful completion of EKG Interpretation Class.
- Computer and typing experience.
